Menam is full of shit, but his fans do not care about that. They do not seem to read or write so, whatever we say about their beloved star, they ain't going to read it.

He is a wedding singer, and not classy weddings, he is reserved for street weeding where the locals turn out to drink some cheap booze, overweight belly dancers and jerks for men. I am sure the people who like this kind of music--it feels like a poor man auto tune music that mechanics come up with at their spare time.

Not sure why Menam keeps making music videos, but nothing stops him from reaching out to grab the cool title of a Sh'abi style. Never mind, those songs tend to sound the same, one beat and one line about the guy being a stud and street smart. It's done in the name of having fun

Super Leefa, The Most Real Popular Album of 2012

Abu El Leef is an awseom singer who has grew tired of outdated songs that only speaks about emotions and not talk about the great picture. People are all around us full of shit, someone has to put them in their place. Once love has been put in place, what comes next? Marriage? Abu El Leef is a social commentator on all things Egypt and its society.

I love this new album and I tend to skip other albums to give this album another listen. Here's my take on each of the album's tracks and subjects discussed.

01 - A3ozo Bellah, a real dose of how most people get in other people business, and try to jinx their life by envying them for their hard work or luck.
02 - Bent El-Nass, this is the most exciting track in the entire album, its recorded as of Abu El Leef is in the 60s performing live in a very folksy sitting. I might not like the guy pretending to be holier than though and speak ill of some females. "Women wearing perfume are hookers" as the song implies. But musically this is a real delight.
03 - Hatofrag 3alena, a duet with unlikely singer Hisham Abbas, a good beat that mixes sweet and humor, I like the energy. A good collaboration for both artists who seem to have real chemistry.
04 - Ta2 To2et El-Fan, the shortest song, but with the most important message, singing is not against Islam. Abu El Leefa delivers a decent song that asks people to chill and not to fight art and artists. A timely message indeed where Abu El Leef speaks truth to powers.
05 - Ba2ena Be Zambalek, a time piece, a wise song about how times change and how people keep chasing the dream wanting to own things. It might have to do with the Arab Spring, one day you are king of the world, the second you are in the hospital. The song plays well to the demographics Abu El Leefa appeal to.
06 - El-Tawoos, a nother song about life and how rich people think they own the world, when in reality they will end in a grave. A dark and gloomy song that some might find is hard to swallow, but just like truth it can be hard to process.
07 - Taxi 2, a sequel to the Abe El Leef's ealier song Taxi, this time he has more money and can afford to hail a cap to take him to Paris. He is knocking down the air quality in Cairo, and such. I like it only because I like the first one. You might like the funk spirit.
08 - TaTa TaTa, a Sh'abi mawal, folks tales and such. I do not love the song, but I know it will be a welcomed track in certain Cairo pockets where their pockets are empty. A song about those who try to live an honest life, tend to get stepped all over by thr people. The gangsters are feared and greeted with love form people all around.
09 - Nena How, a song about cellphones, not answering your phone when you do not know the number. a good song that teaches younger folks to be respectful and not try to go around with girls and fooling around. A song about good people ladies and men who know their limits.
10 - Gedo, a funny humorous take on grandpa. Grandpa can spoil the grand kids and let them get away with stuff. A good song for the kids, it teaches them respect. It's a cute song that celebrates both the young and old. Abu El Leef does a good job here by tabbing into the kids market.
11 - Khaleek Fe El-Nour, one of my favorite tracks on the album. The message, if you want to get married, you should do it by knocking in the front door, no need to go the alternative ways and instead of doing things right, doing it through paper---paper marriages where the contract remains with the bride. This is a common practice, a tricky way to be able to have a sexual relationship and claim, that you are a couple. Abu El Leef tells people to take it easy and do the proper thing. He also tells such guys he will beat them up....imagine this was your sister.
12 - El-Tawoos (Remix), again, the same great song with a new twist.

Laila Nazmi, The Ditsy Egyptian Songstress

Laila Nazmi is a little known Egyptian singer who did a number of light and catchy songs in the the late 60s and 70s. She did the cute songs played the ditsy personality so well. Her songs were humorous and supposed to be a fun dance songs. One more thing not to forget about her, she is from the great city of Alexandria. She did go to music school and graduated in 1968, so she got her education, but her music appealed to those who less education.

I am sure during her time, critics have spoke ill of her (how dare she?) But time has shown them wrong, she is a legend now and her music has been remade by just about every girl who wants to be that ditsy girl who just wants to have fun. Laila's songs are now part of the Egyptian folklore

Laila did small town songs about the girl who falls for the guy next door and tries to win him over by winning over his mother. Her second most famous song is about her not liking tea as she likes a pop instead. I know it sounds lame, but we all grew listening to those songs, and they seem to be favorites at weddings. Laila has starred in  number of movies

Bosy Ah Ya Donia 2012 Album البوم بوسي - اه يادنيا Street Music In Cairo

Bosy wants to be an "it" girl, street festivals and local music are common in Egypt and they have gone mainstream, they tended to be the business of males until Bosy broke the mold and started jamming with the boys, she hit it big and eventually left those circles and got her debut mini album with four track

01.Ah Ya Donia, the hit song of the album, was featured in a popular thug life movie "Al-Almany", made it big in Egypt in the anti-intellectual circles.
02.Saytra, a song stoners will relate too, a lot of shouting and local poor areas beat. Not going to be on TV, but those songs all sound the same--if it was not for the lyrics.
03.Get Ala El Garh, a sad song about life and not having a good luck in it. Poor people like cab drivers, street vendors and under-employed will find something in this song.
04.La w La, a happier song that you can play at your next wedding, a spunky song form a lady who is overjoyed by the wedding they have, telling the other folks, that they are not cool as she is.

I do think the cover art is pretty clever, what it does not do is connect the singer with her art form. She looks like a pop star in LA! Not a street artist who has to deal with a lot of shitty things.

Poor Man's Sha'abi Music Gets A Girl Star!

Whoever said that females cannot compete with almost excessively all male Sh'abi music? Well, these guys are in for a treat, because Heidi Al Baroudy is about to give them a good for their money. With her all girl music video where there's dance, a balady beat and rough around the edges lyrics.

I have one bone to pick, the outfits are not at all stylish, but this might be fitting for those who listen to this kind of music as they are almost never accused of being stylish. None of the dance moves are award winning of course. So if you do not like Egyptian pop, you will not start now with this song.

I think Heidi knows her market very well, and realizes that she is one of girl in an almost all dudes business, so she has to thread carefully. I like the fact that she exists and stands in tall and proud. I may not like this style, but it's not her fault--it's the game.

Egypt's Taxi Driver Will Love Mohammed Abd Elmonim 2012 Album

 Mohammed Abd Elmonim is a homeboy and he is the guy you would want to appear in your movie if your movie has a block party and belly dancer. This young composer and charming singer knows how to kick off a street party. In his title song he swears by the name of the Lord about how excited he is about this girl.

Mohammed might be the next best thing to happen to this Sha'abi music or as it has now been called festivals. Saad Al Soghyar is getting too old for this and Mohammed seems to be a protegee of that singer as he has appeared along his side in a recent movie. So if you are tourist in Egypt, you might want to get familiar with such taste of music because I know your cabbies will be playing it on your ride.

God and women is how poor people live, Mohammed brings the best of both worlds and put it all on a nice soundtrack for everyone to see and hear. The good news is as follows, Abd Elmonim is a decent looking guy--unlike most of singers in the Sh'abi circles. So, here is his new album, I dub it as the party album where we now have a physical proof how poor people like to party it up.

So if you are a guy you would love the songs, and if your a women whose sole concern is men interest and looking good, you will also like this song. But if you want more out of life, this song might not be meant for you.

Some Pop Songs Are Nothing But Audio Porn

While pop songs are meant to be happy and catchy, some singers mistake pop songs for something else. Singers singing and using that seducing voice and making all those noises associated with sexual acts. I have first heard those songs here in the States. But such have been crossing over to other parts of the world including Arabia.

It starts when a untalented singer (a lazy artist with no ideas also) and a horny consumer. Such songs exist in both Lebanon and Egypt and both males and females have used them. But in general, female Lebanese singers and Egyptian male singers have song such songs. I do not care to name names, but those songs are all around us. I have a dozen names of artists who have dabbled into songs of this nature, where there are sexually suggestive language.

I find Lebanese pop filled with such songs, and Egyptian Sha'abi music as well. The artist is not the only one to blame, listeners should also get the blame. But ultimately, it's the fault of the company and the network that promotes such flits that can only comes form lazy and people who have expired artistically.

The Song Homeless Kids In Egypt Won't Be Hearing

For a number of known and unknown reasons, there are kids living in the streets of Egypt under bridges and wherever they can catch some sleep. It's a problem in many parts of the world too, but it should not be happening in Egypt. There are many broken homes in Egypt and there are too many places to look if god forbids you were to lose a child.

A kid of those in the streets just made a song about the homeless kids sleeping the streets. Vocally the song disappoints, but he is a kid, he might have been rive by a noble cause. He is too young to be this sad. The lyrics of the song are really hard to take in from a young boy. The song is about the dreams of such kids and the simple things they seek in life.

It's a sha'abi style song, it does tell real stories of how the problem gets started. Like when someone marries a gains and there's a step parent.

فيلم الالماني All Songs From Thug Life "El Almany"

Egyptian cinema is raving about a movie with the title El-Almany which means the German. A movie that chronicles the life of a street thug in Egypt. If you have not noticed, there are many street thugs in Egypt at the moment. And those people all have stories, they steal things, intimidate people, hurt people and sometimes kill them. Chaos brings out the worst in humanity.

To market the movie, the producers have hired a drove of popular folksy singer to sing for the movie. Those songs are in the Sha'abi style. The music of the poor people and the places where the call home. The same places are also the home of many of those thugs.

All commentators are not too happy about thugs, but most are not too pleased with this kind of music either. To be frank, the movie needs to sell and make money. I think this will be establishing the lead actor in the film, Mohammed Ramadan as a box officer sensation.

Enjoy the street festivals, and the music.

Like Father, Like Son! The Hamouda Duet

Every father wishes his song would pick his trade, that's assuming the father likes his won trade. But father will also entertain the idea of the song doing something better than the father. Not popular Sha'abi singer Abdel Basset Hamouda. He wanted his son to sing with him a duet.

The father is well known among the Egyptian folks for his blues songs about the misery of life and the pain of being wronged by others. The song is dialogue between a guy and his heart. He thinks he is not good enough to make a move on the girl he likes. The father wants to comfort his son who has been failed in the ways of love. I am guessing these tow guys would appear together in weddings around Egypt.

I do like the sad melody, the production value could have been better. The son now knows to love people who are withing his league.

If You Are High, You Will LOVE This Zombie Song

Belly dancers are a dime a dozen in Egypt, good looking ones do not come cheap. That's whay C list singer Mohamed Abdal Mone'm just realized when he hired one to dance in his music video and entertain you as he tried to make the case that he is a legit singer.

Filmed in a small studio and a green room with a thousand t-shirt. Abd El Monaem brough his big role model Sad El Soghayar to guest in the music video. The dancer's name is Sofinar and she seems to be auditioning for a movie role playing cute, naked and awkward sexy. And what's up with those zombie/mummy worthy dance moves?

This is not a horrible video, I have seen much worse, but it;s no classic either. It serves one purpose tell us that the singer is worth a lot of money now--think rappers with bling and fancy cars. Thus if you plan on booking this singer for your wedding party, he might ask for some change.

Shafica, Egypt's Poor Man Diva الفنانه شفيقه

When you get millions of YouTube hits you are no longer anonymous. This is my answer to critics of Shafica, the Egyptian diva that appeals to the forgotten people around Egypt. She is one of the leading lady of folklore sh'abi style music. That entails singing in broken Arabic and telling sad tales about love and betrayal.

Shafica has released three albums throughout her career, they are all below with covers and track lists. I have also included two videos from popular songs of hers. She is the daughter of the sea city of Alexandria where people have their own style of pretty much every and anything. There is also that Greek Egyptian fusion that you see all around this historic city.

Menaem Sings For The Egyptian Quarter

One Egyptian pound is not a lot of money, and they often fly from my hand when I visit that country. But for one singer, and one resident in that country's pockets a quarter of one Egyptian pound can make all the difference. It's an OK tipping amount! But one guy is fed up of it as he travels the streets and plays music.

Apparently it's no longer enough. So Menaem wrote a song about it where he dances in the streets dressed like a million dollar. His like, Can somebody tells me why did they put a hole in the quarter? Funny really, and the beat is a 100 percent Egyptian. It's the song to which the dudes dance and be all cool and manly.

The Egyptian quarter used to be paper money, now no more. If you want a random song that reminds you of all the bizarre Egyptian humor, play this one.

With Game Over Shitty Egyptian Movies Are Not Over

Every time I like to give Egyptian cinema some credit for making good movies and to their credit they have done better movies, I get cold feet. Here's why these shitty movies keep coming, they are cheap to make and they do not have to have a decent plot, just big names and three jokes and song. And that's what it takes to bring down an entire culture.

And yes, of course producers now worry about not making their money back as Egypt shifts shapes every minute. But my beef is with two leading females who accept to be in such silly movies...Game Over is the name of the movie where Yosra and Mai Ezdeen would star along one another and duke it out.

While those are two super stars from two different eras, I am baffled by their role...did they really need that paycheck this bad? Worse, their song to promote the movie is auto-tune for insane people. All that aside, the movie is one long stereotypes about women jealousy and getting in the gutter to bring back one gigantic ghetto movie. No wonder Yosra has been on the attacks in defense of Freedom of Expression, that's her way of wanting to make lame movies.

Ayman Rateb Is The Reason Egyptian Pop Sucks

I once read a survey that said, most Americans hate Egyptian pop, and now I have finally learned why! Songs and music like of new comer Ayman Rated are to blame for this unfortunate bad PR.

Here's what they hate it, it really does sound like you are stuck in a horrible traffic jam. And no one likes that, it just evokes too many painful memories. If you understand, then fine, but if you do not, then play the music video below and tell me it does not sound like a traffic jam.

Not only does the song and its beat are uninspiring, it's also unoriginal as I feel I have heard this song ten years ago form Egyptian pop singer Hakeem. I think Ayman Rateb might be a cool guy to hang out with if you are drunk or stoned, but if you wanted good music, do not let him anywhere near a mic.

Every country has a local art form that appeal to the working class in that given country. This art from can be very hard for outsiders to decode, the stories they tell are very common around the world, but the langauge and music they use to express makes it very local and make it difuct to transport.

Folklore is one of those art forms. most Arab countries have an art form of Sha'abi music--folksy. here's one Iraqi signer that does just that for Iraq. He is not a big name, but his name is Nasrat Al Badir. Do not know much about him really, but happy to have listed to this song of his. Lok Lok, is Arabic for too much talk.

Sandy Does It Old School Style?

Sandy asked this show to delay the airing of her appearance on the show due to the bloodbath in Egypt right now. She has even canceled her Valentine Day concert in observance of the state of mourning. Most entertainers have done the same.

Amr Elmasry "Ba7eb Israel": Funny Or Anti-Israel Song

"I am an Egyptian Man" says this song. Amr El masry is not class act, he is a new comer to the Sha'abi music style. That;s folks music as played by cab drivers and people in those poor areas around Cairo.

His song caught the internet by fire, and the title is sure to offend just about evryone, "I Love Israel" is the title. And then once Arabs get passed their emotions, they give this song a listen, only to learn that Amr is no foreign agent. You must hear the song, but I am sure Israel is not too happy about that.

The singer wishes to see Israel dissolve and other lines that do little good. This song is supposed to be funny and meant to get someone to become famous, it's like marketing with steroid. However, most people who listen to this kind of music are the sons who are on drugs, consume alcohol and have little influence in the real world.

Too Bad, I Never Danced Like This At My Wedding

Dancing with canes, sticks and daggers is as Arab as Algebra. But dance is a lot more fun than the latter. Here's an inside footage of some Arabic (Egyptian namely) wedding and you get that baladi beat, just they they do it in the old country.

I must say, the dude got some moves and he kept going at it, but being a dancing Arab dude is no easy task, it's a whole new level of intimidating. I am all about dance and wedding, but when you are on the spot and all eyes are on you, then the bar is high. I cannot let me self be the goofy kind, this guy does not mind it.
